Ukuleles

Three Portuguese men came to Hawaii in 1879 and made the first ukuleles (which translates roughly to 'Jumping Fleas'). It has since become Hawaii's most popular instrument. It had its heyday in the roaring 1920s and then again when TV star Arthur Godfrey played tunes on his uke between acts in the '50s. In the '90s artists like George Harrison helped to give the ukulele new popularity. Many ordinary people, most who have never played a musical instrument before, have found that they can play the relatively easy to learn ukulele. It is light , portable and you can take it just about anywhere. In fact, just bring out a ukulele and smiles suddenly appear on everyone's faces. It was Paul McCartney who said, "To this day, if I ever meet grownups who play ukulele, I love 'em."  Paul McCartney played 'Something' on his uke during his last tour.
