Three Portuguese men came to
Hawaii in 1879 and made the first ukuleles (which translates roughly
to 'Jumping Fleas'). It has since become Hawaii's most popular
instrument. It had its heyday in the roaring 1920s and then again
when TV star Arthur Godfrey played tunes on his uke between acts in
the '50s. In the '90s artists like George Harrison helped to give
the ukulele new popularity. Many ordinary people, most who have
never played a musical instrument before, have found that they can
play the relatively easy to learn ukulele. It is light , portable
and you can take it just about anywhere. In fact, just bring out a
ukulele and smiles suddenly appear on everyone's faces. It was Paul
McCartney who said, "To this day, if I ever meet grownups who play
ukulele, I love 'em." Paul McCartney played 'Something' on his
