The
bodhrán (pronounced
bough-rawn) is a special kind of frame drum native to Ireland and is
said to be the heartbeat of Irish music.
It is an ancient
instrument traditionally made with a wooden body and a goat-skin
head and ranges
in size from 10" to 26" in diameter.
The bodhrán can be played with one hand, a double-headed
stick called a cipín, a tipper, a beater, a hotrod or a brush. Some
are also crafted with a tuning mechanism.
