Karen McKibben began her musical
education at the age of four and by seven she began pursuing
classical studies in piano. Her classical training continued through
high school and included playing for school choirs, choral groups,
churches, as well as teaching piano.
Her life-long dream had been to play the harp professionally. She
has studied and can teach both beginning pedal harp technique and
lever harp. Although classically trained, she is inspired by a wide
range of music: classical, folk, blues, jazz, and therapeutic music
(such as for the hospice setting).
Karen has played as a guest performer for the Symphony Orchestra of
Albuquerque Chamber Concert. She was a long-time member of the
musical group "Celtic Coyotes" which plays traditional Irish,
Scottish and Welsh music. She performs regularly for nursing homes,
retirement centers, parties, funerals, and celebrations.
During lessons, Karen emphasizes the importance of proper technique
as a strong foundation for progress. Her lessons include practical
technique, music theory and improvisation. She offers individual
lessons and the opportunity for her students to gather regularly for
harp circles where they can share what they have learned and also
have fun playing together. Karen welcomes all ages and levels of
students.
